The Pithy Take

The Golden Girls–yes, I’m talking about the show–is the classic sitcom about unmarried women and the rich, complex, and wonderful lives they lead. Debuting in 1985 and ending its run in 1992, the show revolves around characters played by Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, Estelle Getty, and Betty White, who share a home in Florida.

The show, notable not only because the lead women were unmarried, but also because they were much older than protagonists in other shows, explored friendship, love, dating, aging, and family. It was warm and funny, and generously portrayed older, unmarried women as unique characters who had their own hopes and dreams.
