The Pithy Take

Edwidge Danticat (author of the excellent short story collection Everything Inside), tells a sad, beautiful children’s story about a family separated. A young daughter misses her mother, who is being held in an immigration detention center, and the mother sends the daughter bedtime tales. It is a reminder that immigration policies have a real–and potentially devastating–impact on families and children.

In the car on the way home, I miss Mama so much my belly aches. I fall asleep and dream of the visit, except in my dream, Mama comes home with Papa and me.
