NRDC – Acid Test

The Natural Resources Defense Council sounds the alarm on ocean acidification: the carbon dioxide we’re putting into the atmosphere is seeping into the oceans, too. Oceans absorb an alarming amount of carbon dioxide – there are roughly 22 million tons generated each day and when it mixes with water, chemically, it becomes an acid.

We have only begun to learn about how mightily organisms struggle in this quickly changing environment, and are realizing that many do not survive. We are profoundly altering the ocean’s chemistry, unwilling to acknowledge the effect on not only the ocean but also us. We may lose ecosystems in a few decades – how can we give the ocean a chance to recover?

NRDC’s unfailing efforts to revive the planet and its environment are elegantly showcased in its documentary, “Acid Test,” explaining why we have only just begun to pay attention to this phenomenon, and why we must act before our ignorance dooms us all.
