The Pithy Take
The Mid-Autumn Festival, celebrated in many East Asian countries, falls on the 15th day of the lunar calendar. The mooncake’s shape (a circle!) represents reunion and coming together. Most mooncakes have a soft crust filled with a sweet paste (white lotus seed and red bean), and some have salted egg yolk. Below is a link to a recipe. Please note, I have not made this before because I’m a tragic, embarrassing baker, but one of my friends followed this recipe and the mooncakes tasted like they were from a $50-fancy-box-of-monncakes from your local Asian grocery store.
