The Pithy Take
If this month’s focus is social infrastructure, then the Detroit River Story Lab presents a complementary feature: narrative infrastructure. Places have stories, and those stories lend meaning to those places and give us an emotional and spiritual anchor in our community.
The University of Michigan’s Detroit River Story Lab partners with regional organizations to connect communities with the Detroit River and its stories. These partnerships amplify marginalized voices–building narrative infrastructure–and lift the river’s role in Detroit and other nearby locations.
There’s a podcast, as well as a skiff & schooner program, a digital mapping project, and much more. It is a truly impressive program that recognizes the need for connection, meaning, and investment in our communities.
